ROYAL BRACKLA
One of our first cask purchases was from the Royal Brackla Distillery on the Cawdor Estate in the Highlands. The distillery has been producing whisky for over 200 years and revamped its core 12YO, 18YO and 21YO release in 2021.
This unique whisky has fully matured since April 2008 in a first-fill Oloroso Sherry hogshead and is bottled at cask-strength of 55%.
TASTING NOTES
Colour: Bright copper
Nose: The unreduced nose yields aromas of warm fruit crumble with baked plums and rich peach topped with oats, muscovado sugar and a sprinkle of mace, served with rum and caramel custard. A drop of water releases golden syrup sponge, warm gingerbread and brandy snaps. With time old fashioned rosehip syrup, blackcurrant lozenges and ripe wild berries.
Palate: The initial sensation is quite prickly with sharp greengage, red apples and plum with a dusting of cinnamon. The texture chewy and coating, with appealing flavours of ham with a marmalade crust. With water, the texture is smoother like velvet with rich milk chocolate mousse with hints of ginger. More of the fruitiness develops with plum, blackcurrants and ripe brambles.
Finish: At full strength it’s quite punchy but softens well with water. It is long and viscous with a warming and satisfying finale.
